The Drive 98.9 FM launches with Immodium!

Take that old people! Nothing like telling the blue-hair seniors who were loyal to 1380 to go screw themselves by launching with Nirvana's Immodium! In case you missed it (or your radio doesn't get the frequency) 98.9 FM official launched at 3 p.m. today. Naming a station after a day-part? We'll see. While the fall book isn't really going to tell us much (except if FM96 made any dent into K-ROCK's audiences), the Spring book will tell us if CTVglobemedia can put an old Kingston jock to grab the young male audience.

Time will tell...keep your radio tuned!

OK...so, as many radio-types in Kingston have probably done, I've followed the interesting yet seemingly uneducated rants of one called 'radio guy' over the past weeks. I am surprised that no one else has chimed in as of yet. Maybe even disappointed. So, I'll jump in. Let's get a few things corrected:
1) It's "CHUM Radio" not CTVglobemedia (radio). It's a division of CTVglobemedia however the 'CHUM Radio' division name remains...along with the proud heritage.
2) No one is telling anyone to go screw themselves. I'm sure the AMC Pacer is no longer being built because no one bought the damn thing. This is clearly a business decision made with the sole interest of doing the best thing for CHUM Radio, in terms of potential audience development for its Kingston Divsion...every other reason anyone might toss out there would be secondary. You don't invest the kind of money it takes to launch a new FM station and not do the due diligence.
3) The fall book isn't going to tell us much...ya think? It'll do what every book does...give us audience estimates (within a margin of error) for a particular moment in time. Take it with a grain of salt, blend it with 2 or three other books, spin it, toss it, and it'll be over by the time Christmas comes...just in time to start another ratings period.
4) Naming a station after a day-part. Very insightful. And horribly, sadly way off the mark. Maybe the writer could have tried to research a little bit or listen longer before tossing out that gem. Really.
5) The station is: '98-9 The Drive' (not the inverted as above and there's no FM in the name). See point 4 for more (i.e. read something first).
6) The station did NOT launch with Immodium...I'll let you look it up.
7) The spring book will give us audience estimates (nevermind, see #3)...and never underestimate the power of hard work, talent and time. It's a marathon baby. By the way assuming the station is geared to young males (whatever that means) is also not correct. Unless the reference is comparing the average age of CKLC-AM. Then, maybe...

The only thing I can gather by your 'name' (radio guy) is that it's either your dream job or you work for anyone but CHUM Radio.

I hope others will offer up there thoughts on Kingston Radio...could be a good forum, or just plain fun. It's an exciting time for radio in this market.

Later, radioGM...yes, I am.

This is all very interesting, but aren't there enough rock/rock hybrid stations in this small market already. Four now, hmm. The pie is sliced awfully thin.

Has anyone thought about the over 40 audience. The people who buy Volvos, bigger houses, take trips, have kids in soccer. Last check there was one, maybe two stations that semiappeal to this group.

Also, as a parent with children in the 18-24 demo, a quick update.. Ipods, file sharing. This group get the media they want instantly online.

There is a cavernous hole for a radio station with popular music from 1965 to 1985. You know, Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Police. Not schlock, good solid material. BUT, more importantly, a good moring show. With news and casual discouorse about what's really going on.

Enough about Britney and Tom Cruise. How about the wind farm on Wolfe Island, who will pay for the LVEC? tire burning at Lafarge, how the Hip are trying to save Lake Ontario, how our schools rank, what's wrong with the hospitals? does Peter Miliken do anything? who's to blame for Aberdeen Street - the landlords..
Smart talk makes for smart citizens.

Radio can be about community, yes, all the local stations give to charity. But they can be more, they can be a beacon for real news (not a few random stories from The Whig) but a good solid 7-10 minutes of local, provintial, national and international information.

Real online polls about real topics that are really important to our lives.

680 does it, CHFI does it. You can too.

The CBC takes its Kingston audience by default, they always have. The CBC is Torontocentric and stale. A fresh take on morning radio can win. Right now mornings are very loud but you dont hear anything.

Come on Kingston Radio GM's, PD's and ND's. Rethink radio for the demo that comes after age 39.
